Who Else Wants Their Phone Ringing Off The Hook With Quality Job Interviews?

Making Resume Formats Simple

-->

by Cynthia Penfold

Although it can be very helpful to look at sample resumes and read about the latest trends online, do not get caught up in the different resume formats. If the information you write is concise and to the point, yet offers the right amount of details, the particular format you use will not even matter.

Before you begin the process of writing your resume, it is important to realize resume formats can be changed. Regardless of the type of format you select, you can make changes to make this format more suitable for you. It is even possible to create a resume which incorporates design features of two different formats.

Next you should know that the format of your resume will not get you a job. Sure a poorly formatted resume can cost you a job but no one is going to hire you based on the format of your resume alone. Your previous work experiences and the way you present yourself are far more important.

In some cases you may be wise to allow your personal situation dictate the type of format you use. For example if you have not been able to demonstrate longevity it might be a good idea to opt for a functional format so the amount of time you spent at each job is not on display. A chronological format will be more appropriate if you can use this to demonstrate how your career has progressed.

The last thing to understand is it is not a good idea to allow resume formats to control your resume. You can avoid this by not leaving out information which is important just because the format does not include this information or not adding information which is not useful just because the format includes this information. This is important because potential employers may overlook your resume if it does not include necessary information or includes too much information that is not useful.
