We all know that the economic crisis that exists in the world today is all too real. Each day the headlines forecast the gloom and doom in the job market by an astounding number of layoffs in some of the world’s largest companies. However, this news should not preclude you from an employment job search if you are currently out of work.
You may find it difficult to believe, but there are still some companies in many types of industries that are hiring new talent. There are jobs to be found, but you need to be smarter in your job search strategies in order to find the employment you are seeking today.
The following job search tips will be helpful in organizing job search strategies to find employment in today’s environment. First, decide what types of jobs you are interested in pursuing. If you are a college student, a recent college grad or alumni, you can make contact with your college career office and they can put you through a series of tests that will determine the best jobs that fit your skills. If you have no affiliation with a college, you can contact the Department of Labor in your state for the programs they provide to individuals seeking jobs.
Second, make contact with all your friends and the network you have in your Rolodex to put the word out that you are in the employment job search mode. It’s surprising how many people end up with a job by making contact with a friend who knows a friend whose company may be looking for someone just like you to fill a staffing position.
Third, concentrate on a select few companies that you would like to work with. Put your effort into making contact with these companies letting them know you would really like to work for them. You can break down your select companies into three different categories: 1) your ideal job, 2) an acceptable job and 3) a job that will pay the bills. Thinking about your employment job search in this manner allows you to find a job without paralyzing you with inaction because you’re always trying to find the perfect job.
Fourth, take your job search to the Internet with online job search using today’s powerful job search engines. In today’s digital age, a headhunter of a company will often perform major recruiting online. The two best free job search websites are Monster.com and Job.com. These sites will provide you with access to millions of jobs all across the world, in every field imaginable and in every salary range. You simply need to respond to the job listings with a cover letter and resume.
Fifth, you need to represent yourself on paper, in the form of a resume, in an impressive manner. Because of the competition for jobs today you cannot afford to have a mediocre resume. You may have all the experience in the world but if your two or three page resume is not a professional polished piece of work, you will likely be passed over for someone less qualified than you.
