Most people get very concerned when they find out they are going to have a background check performed on them. They often wonder how long the check will cover. They believe that something they may have done when they were younger could come back to haunt them now. It is no surprise that many people may have things they are ashamed of when they were younger that as responsible adults now, would not want anyone to know about. Thankfully, most people can be assured that things they did over ten years ago probably will not show up.

Most of the time potential employers check their future employees records back five to seven years. If you are looking to get a federal job, they can go back much further. So that bad thing you did while in college probably will not show up on your record, especially if you are over thirty years old. If you committed a felony, you may have a problem however, they show up on your record much longer.

If you are applying for a federal job such as with the Internal Revenue Service, they can go back as much as twelve years and more. This is because federal jobs are classified jobs. It will also depend on how sensitive the federal job is. If you are trying to get a job as a grocery store clerk, then it will be much different and a shorter time span will be examined than if you are trying to be an FBI agent. Every company has different time frames they use, it depends on who you will be working with and what the job entails.

Whenever you think about the background check the first thought that crosses our minds is how many years back does the background check goes!! And the reason being, in your younger days, you weren’t that thoughtful and now is coming back to irk you. However, it is now common for every adult to be stressed about background check. Thanks to the new ways, most of us can be rest assured that the notorious things we must have done in our younger years wouldn’t retaliate back.

Now the answer to how many years does a background check goes back depends upon the employees which mostly think it is about five to seven years but sometimes it can even go back further if you have started working earlier. So if you are in your 30s and 40s, you are still safe especially if you have done something in your younger ages and that wouldn’t do any harm to your current job. But then if there is any stuff that may have happened in the past five to seven years then you need to cautious because this might affect your career.

But for instance if you are applying for a job either with the federal or state agency then here the background checks can even go further to ten to twelve years and may be more. This check is directly influenced by the importance and caliber of the job you are about to apply for. So, basically, the background checks completely depends upon the job you are about to apply. Like for instance, if you are applying for a teachers position, then the background check may be only for last five years whereas if you are applying for a server in the hotel, then it could be somewhere around two to five years. Every company and the every position require various rounds of background checks. What can be accepted also depends upon the category of the post you have applied for and what kind of responsibilities you are undertaking.
